Food supply: Prison contractors urge FG to settle N5.6bn debt

By Charles Kumolu

A group, Alliance for Good Governance and Democracy, has called on the Federal Government to ensure the payment of the N5.6 billion owed prison contractors for the supply of food across the country.

It also said the debt was incurred more than two years after the government increased the feeding allowance of inmates from N200 to N450.

The group, in a statement by Mr Shedrak Nwokolo and Jimi Sanwo, said that the failure to pay the debt could create challenges for inmates.

They said, “We, therefore, call and appeal to our listening President, MuhammaduBuhari,  the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Bello Danbazau and the prison authorities for a quick intervention in the lingering issue so as to avert an imminent stoppage of food supplies to inmates in prisons nationwide.

“It saddens us  that most of these patriotic contractors are struggling to survive, while some are facing litigations from banks and microfinance outfits where they obtained loans. Some, we gathered have lost their lives because of the indebtedness.”
