Boko Haram: Reps to probe movement of funds for Bama Initiative

ABUJA—The House of Representatives yesterday resolved to set up an Adhoc committee to investigate the movement of funds meant for the rehabilitation of Bama in the North East.

Adopting a motion, titled “Need to Stop the Implementation of the Bama Initiative by None Statutory Committees and Remit Same to Presidential Committee on North East Initiative, PINE, for Proper Mandatory Execution”, sponsored by Muhammad Abdu representing Alkaleri/Kirfi Federal Constituency of   Bauchi State during plenary, members of the House stated that funds meant for Bama Initiative, through the Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative, PINE, should not be handled by two non- statutory special committees floating between the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and the Presidency.

Presenting the motion earlier, Abdu noted that the media had been awash with abnormal movement of appropriated North East Intervention Fund.

He said: “The House notes with dismay the plethora of complaints and rumblings in the Main and Social Media regarding the alleged intended abnormal movement of appropriated North East Intervention Fund meant to be domiciled and utilized by the Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative, PINE, and that of Consolidated Pool Account domiciled in the Office of Accountant General of the Federation.

“That the above funds to be moved to a special account is meant to fund a pilot project called the Bama Initiative

“That Bama Initiative as conceived, is not meant to be handled by two non- statutory special committees floating between the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and the Presidency.
