Athletics Federation of Nigeria is wrapped up in uncertainty, as a good number of board members are angling to push Ibrahim Gusau who was elected on June 13 as president, out of the federation.
The AFN has been swimming in crisis since that controversial election in Abuja. It took a new twist last week as Gusau and his kitchen cabinet came out with a list of committees and their membership, a development that has not gone down well with the elected members of the AFN board.
According to former Edo State commissioner for sports, Brown Ebewele the said list of committees and membership released by Gusau will not stand as it did not emanate from the AFN board, which has the authority to constitute the committees.
“I am not so sure Gusau can read. Because if he can read he would have seen the AFN guidelines on setting up the committees; he sat down with some people who are not even qualified to be board members and drew up a list.
“In the first place there several petitions about the candidacy of Gusau. And also so the so called athletes rep, with time things will be sorted out,” Ebewele said yesterday.
Also the vice-president of the AFN, Olamide George stated that members of the public should disregard the list.
“As far as we are concerned, the sub-committees of the AFN have not been constituted.
“The board has not met to deliberate on it and other issues necessary to enable us hit the ground running,” said George, a former national 400m hurler and member of the Ondo state House of Assembly.
Other members like Gabriel Okon, Fidelis Tafida Gadzama and Professor Emmanuel Ojeme also registered their dismay over the development.
It was gathered that Gadzama irked by the development, has approached the Court of Sports Arbitration in Switzerland to seek redress. And CAS has asked Gadzama for evidence to buttress his case.
Meanwhile the board members have given the federation’s president two weeks to call for a board meeting to enable them chart a positive course for the federation in view of the very daunting task ahead.
