By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA—One of those who sustained serious injuries from last week’s cooking gas explosion at Obosi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State has been reported dead as others are still recuperating in various hospitals.

It will be recalled that four people died, when a cooking gas cylinder exploded at Trinity Gas Limited Station at Obosi.

Director of the plant, Mr. Uzo Nwanya, who disclosed this when the executive members of Nigeria Association of Liquefied Gas Petroleum Marketers, NALGPM, paid a condolence visit to the plant, said among the five deceased persons, three were staff of the plant, while two others were customers.

Nwanya noted that his youngest brother, Somtochukwu Nwanya, a trained gas filler, was equally among those who died on the spot, while trying to close the tap to a big gas tanker, adding that though he succeeded in closing the tap, which prevented the flame from entering the big tanker, he was burnt to death in the process.

He noted that the explosion occurred when a five kilogramme-cylinder that was being refilled burst open and ignited fire on other cylinders, both empty and filled ones, adding that though they were yet to quantify the extent of lost, the explosion damaged walls, roofs, scales, cylinders and louvres in the offices.
