Two Ukrainian athletes, including Olympic relay bronze medallist Olesya Povkh, have been provisionally suspended for using banned substances, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced Thursday.

Povkh was entered to compete in the women’s 100m and 4x100m relay at the IAAF World Championships in London while Olha Zemlyak was due to race the 400m and 4x400m relay.

“The provisional suspensions have been imposed following each athlete being charged with an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) for the use of a prohibited substance,” said the AIU, the independent body that manages all doping and non-doping integrity-related matters in athletics.

Each athlete is now afforded the right to a hearing to determine the charge in accordance with IAAF Rules, it said, adding the duo remain provisionally suspended until the outcome of their respective cases.

Apart from winning bronze with Ukraine’s 4x100m relay team at the 2012 London Olympics, Povkh also won relay bronze in the 2011 Daegu worlds and gold at the European championships in Barcelona in 2010. Her individual medal haul includes European 100m silver in Helsinki in 2012, European indoor 60m gold in 2011 and a silver in the same event earlier this year in Split.

Zemlyak won two European silvers in 2012 (400m, 4x400m relay) and relay gold two years earlier in Helsinki.
