ABUJA—Community Rights Activist, Chief Doubra Green Miyenebi, has called on the people of Niger Delta to allow the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani, to clean up the ministry and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in the interests of the region.
Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, Pastor Usani, according to Chief Miyenebi, has demonstrated his determination to ensure that the people of Niger Delta received their dues in terms of development projects, in the last two years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
Chief Miyenebi was reacting to last weekend attacks on the minister by a group under the aegis of Niger Delta Association for Peace and Unity, NDAPU, for querying some NDDC Executive Directors and other top officials over issues bordering on alleged abuse of office and failure to adhere to due process in procurement.
The minister was also accused of high-handedness, with the petitioners calling for his removal.
However, Chief Miyenebi who rose to the minister’s defence said that pastor Usani should be commended by the people of the Niger Delta, for making sure that the high level of corruption which was identified with the commission and the ministry became a thing of the past.
He said: “The petitioners, in their zeal to satisfy their paymasters forgot that it is the same President Buhari who appointed the Board, Directors and Commissioners of NDDC, who also appointed Usani as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and saddled him with the responsibility of overseeing the activities of the commission.
“The Minister has the prerogative to query whomever he feels is drawing back the hands of the clock, whether in the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs or in the NDDC. They also forgot too soon that the same Usani, whom they are accusing of interfering in the affairs of the Commission, inaugurated the leadership of the Commission in the month of November 2016 and signed their letters of appointment.”
“The petitioners are the agents of the dark evil days – people who held the entire Niger Delta region hostage and quarantined the future of our children.
“Is there anyone who did not know the opprobrium that was associated with NDDC and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, before the appointment of Pastor Usani as Minister? Who did not know the odium that Nigerians expressed towards the Ministry in the six years of its existence before this administration?
“Given this background, that the Minister queries acts that fall short of transparency and probity in the management of the NDDC, should be seen as being in the overall interest of the nation’s economy, and specifically the Niger Delta region, for which he should be commended, not vilified.
“To say the least, no good-spirited Nigerian, especially a Niger Deltan, whose region had suffered immensely from the ignoble corrupt system that characterised the NDDC, before President Buhari’s administration, and indeed the appointment of Usani as minister, can in good conscience oppose the Minister’s actions in his determination to clean up that organisation and make it deliver on its mandate.”
