Unity schools suspend strike, as labour gives FG 30-day ultimatum on salaries

By Victor   Ahiuma-Young

ABUJA—Following appeals by stakeholders including parents, guardians and other well-meaning Nigerians, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, yesterday, suspended the eight-week-old strike in some of the Federal Unity Colleges.

However, ASCSN said it was giving the Federal Government 30 days to pay the outstanding salaries, failing which a full-blown strike will be declared in all the 104 Unity Colleges throughout the country.

Announcing the development in a statement in Abuja, ASCSN Secretary-General, Alade Lawal, explained that the strike was suspended after a meeting of the leadership of the union with the zonal co-coordinators and the unit chairmen of the ASCSN in the affected colleges.

The Unity Colleges that had been on strike are Federal Government, College, Nise, Anambra State; Federal Girls College, FGC, Shagamu, Ogun State; FGC, Ilorin, Kwara State; FGC, Ikirun, Osun State;

Others are Federal Science Technical College, FSTC, Ilesa, Osun State; FSTC, Doma, Nasarawa State; FSTC, Otukpo, Benue State; FGC, Warri, Delta State; FGGC, Omu-Aran, Kwara State; and FGC, Rubochi, Abuja.

Meanwhile, parents of students of FGGC, Sagamu, which had been on strike since May 8, have commended ASCSN for suspending the action.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association, PTA, of the college, Mr. Gbenga Oyesola, said the continuous closure of the schools was detrimental to the students, who had lost substantial part of the academic calendar.

He implored the Federal Government to respect the collective agreement entered with the union to forestall future re-occurrence.
