One killed as Army, Police foil kidnap operation in A-Ibom

UYO – The 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army in Akwa Ibom on Saturday foiled an attempt by kidnappers to abduct a villager, Chief Malachy Umoren in Idu Community, headquarters of Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Vanguard learned, the five-man criminal gang had already captured their victim and spade off in a Primera Saloon car, when soldiers and the police during joint operation in the area on gave them a hot chase.

It was also gathered that, the joint security forces engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel till the hoodlums succumbed to their superior fire power, later abandoned their victim and escaped into the bush, while one of them who caught in the cross-fire was captured.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Chukwu Ikechukwu, when contacted on the telephone confirmed the incident to our correspondent saying that, one of the kidnappers who was wounded during the exchange of fire with the security forces later died in the hospital.

According to him, ‘‘there was an attempt to kidnap a villager at Idu Uruan but, was foiled by the joint operation of the Army and the Police.

‘‘The man was rescued successfully and is in a stable condition now in the hospital but, one of the kidnappers who sustained serious injury but, was rushed to the hospital later died, while the investigation is ongoing to arrest others involved in the crime’’.

In the same vein, 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Uyo in a statement issued by the Assistant Director, Public Relations, Capt. Umar Shuaib stated inter alia that, ‘‘the gallant troops of 2 Brigade Nigerian Army conducted a successful operation today 23 Jun 17 and rescued one chief Malachy of Idu, Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

‘‘The Chief was kidnapped by a 5 man gang of criminals at his compound at Idu, Uruan.

The troops, after a shootout with the hoodlums succeeded in arresting one of the suspected kidnappers, who has gunshot wound.

‘‘Both the victim and the suspected kidnapper are presently receiving medical attention at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital’’.

Capt Umar also maintained that, several dangerous items were recovered from the hoodlums some of which are; one pump action rifle, four locally made pistols, two cutlasses, three mobile phones, three pump action rifle cartridges, four ATM cards, an envelope containing some documents and one Nissan Primera Salon Car.

Commander 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Abdu Ibrahim Hassan has assured that, there would be no hiding place for criminal elements in the state, and urged the residents to expose criminal perpetrators in their midst.
