LAGOS—A doctor, his friend and sympathisers have, so far, been funding the treatment of Friday Paul, whose uncle drove a three-inch nail into his skull over N500.

Meanwhile, doctors at Saviour The Rock Hospital, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, where Friday is being treated,  yesterday, expressed hope about his medical condition.

The eight years old orphan was rushed to the private hospital last weekend, where doctors successfully removed the nail from his head on Sunday. Yesterday, the medical team said that he was recuperating well.

The Head of the medical team, Doctor Adelana Odumabo, said Friday is likely to be discharged in the next three days, provided his family meets up with the yet-to-be determined medical bill.

However, information at Vanguard’s disposal revealed there is no likelihood that the bill can be offset by the family due to their poor financial status.

Funding

Sources in the hospital said the doctor has expended his personal funds on the treatment, when family and sympathisers could not meet up with the initial deposit of N70,000.

The doctor was said to have performed the life-saving surgery not minding the inability of the boy’s family to deposit anything.

Sources also said that apart from the deep cut on the skull occasioned by the nail, Friday’s skin is full of scars as a result of ill-treatment from his uncle.

It was learned that a family friend to the doctor funded the initial X-rays, while family and sympathisers deposited N40,000 out of the N70,000 needed.

Odumabo said the boy has been under observation since Tuesday, and can eat, drink, talk and relate normally, although Vanguard was not allowed to interview him in compliance with Police instruction.

One of the sources claimed that policemen from Sagamu Road Division left instruction that the boy should be restricted from having contact with visitors.

Recall that Vanguard, Monday, reported that Friday’s uncle, one Mr. Paul, allegedly accused him of stealing N500, which the eight-year-old boy denied.

The infuriated uncle was said to have dragged the boy into an apartment and tortured him. Not done with that, he was said to have driven the three-inch nail into Friday’s skull.

The boy lives with his uncle and his immediate family in a room apartment at 6, Anjolarin Street, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, after the death of his (Friday) parents about two years ago.

Neighbours want victim kept from uncle

At press time, neighbours insisted that the boy should not return to his uncle due to the fact that he had been abused several times.

Three of them, Kunle Toluwa-nile, Deji Okunronmu and Madam Mulikat Tijani, said on one of the occasions, the uncle tied the boy to a ceiling fan.

According to them, Mr. Paul usually protects his biological children, but detests Friday for reasons best known to him.

They recalled a day he tied him to a ceiling fan, saying it took their intervention before the boy was rescued.

“Honestly, the boy should not return to his uncle,” they chorused.
