BENIN—THE Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, has disclosed plans to introduce special markets where food stuff will be sold at discount prices to carter for the needs of the less priviledged in society.
The monarch, who disclosed this during his coronation thank you visit to Esan traditional rulers, also expressed optimism that the crisis which led to the suspension of the Onojie of Uromi by the state government will be looked into, adding that it was the resolve of his administration to collaborate with the state government in ensuring a peaceful and poverty free society.
The monarch who noted that poverty and unemployment were dangerous for any society, pointed out that there was so much under development at the grassroots level , saying, “That is why we all must join hands with the state government to find solution to the problem. As part of our reforms, we are introducing ‘Sunday, Sunday’ farm produce discount market which will carter for the needs of the poor in the society.
“We are going to do this so that nobody will have any excuse to go into crime. People go into crime when they have no food to eat but there will be food for everybody and that is our target.”
Reacting to the suspended Onojie of Uromi, he said: “I am looking forward to receiving a delegation of Esan traditional rulers in my palace so that we can sit down and examine ways of resolving the matter amicably.”
Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Dr. Justin Okonobo, who also doubled as the chairman of the reception committee, said that the love the Oba of Benin has for the Esan has deepened with the decision of the monarch to visit Esanland.
In his welcome address, the Onojie of Ekpoma, H.R.H Abureme expressed gratitude to the Oba for the visit, describing him as a father and a brother.
He commended the Oba for the abolition of Community Development Associations in the state, noting that peace has returned to the communities since then.
