THE race for the next occupant of the Awka Government House is as hot as political watchers had expected. Essentially, it is beginning to narrow down between the Southern and the Northern zones.

THE incumbent, Governor Willie Obiano, is from the North and many people from the zone have been arguing that he should be allowed to do eight years like former Governor Peter Obi from Anambra Central before it shifts to another zone.
However, aspirants from the South senatorial zone are arguing that there was no written agreement in the state that a zone must do two tenures, explaining that Obi was able to break the jinx of one-tenure in the state because of his excellent performance from his first tenure.
Aspirants from the South for this year’s election include Chief George Moghalu, Mr. Barth Nwibe, Senator Andy Uba, Dr. Obinna Uzor, all of the All Progressive Congress, APC, as well as Mr. Godwin Ezeemo (Progressive Peoples’ Alliance, PPA ). Those from the North senatorial zones are Mr. Oseloka Obaze, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Mr. Ezenwa Nzeribe, all of PDP, as well as Dr. Tony Nwoye and Dr. Chike Obidigbo of the APC.
From the central is Osita Chidoka of the United Peoples’ Party, UPP. The incumbent, Chief Obiano remains the only candidate of APGA, although the ongoing leadership crisis in the party has thrown up Dr. Elo Afoka from Anambra South, who is insisting on challenging Obiano at the party primaries.
The argument of politicians from the South is that former Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju was not allowed to go for second tenure and that aspirants from the zone have every right to seek for election so as to correct the perceived injustice done to the zone in 2013 when Dr. Chris Ngige from Anambra Central was elected.
But Obiano’s camp is also arguing that the best option for the South is for politicians from the zone to support the incumbent and take the governorship naturally from him in 2022.
Meanwhile, others supporting aspirants like Doctors Obiogbolu and Nwoye from Anambra North are insisting that Obiano has not done enough to give a good account of the potentials of the zone and are as such striving to give a better representation.
