Scavenger gets six strokes of cane for stealing 6 cartons of tiles

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered that one Abubakar Mohammed, 20, be given six strokes of the cane for being in possession of six cartons of tiles, suspected to be stolen.

Mohammed of Jabi Motor Park, Abuja, was convicted on a count charge of being in possession of stolen item.

The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, ordered flogging of Mohammed as he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Dalhatu Zannah, had told the court that a crime prevention unit led by one Asp. Mohammed Ahmed of Surveillance Police Team arrested and brought the convict to the Gwarinpa Police Station.

Zannah said that the team caught Mohammed on April 2 along 1st Avenue, Gwarinpa Estate, with six cartons of wall tiles, suspected to be stolen.

He said the convict could not give satisfactory account of where he got the items during police investigation.

He added that the case was still under investigation and the offence contravened Section 319a of the Penal Code.
