Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has been ruled out of both Champions League semi-finals with Atletico Madrid with calf injury and could miss the rest of the title run in.

The winger is in a race against time to play again this season after his grade 2 calf tear – with the La Liga campaign set to finish on May 21, just four weeks away.

Madrid said in a statement: “Following the tests carried out on Gareth Bale by the Sanitas Medical Services, the player has been diagnosed with a grade 2 injury in his left calf. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

The Welshman was rushed back for El Clasico at the week end after damaging his calf against Bayern Munich in the Champions League first-leg.

But Bale only managed 39 minutes before he was forced to hobble off clutching his leg.

Asked if he regretted rushing Bale back for the game, manager Zinedine Zidane replied: “He said he was fine and excited to play and thought he was fine. I don’t regret it.

“I’m disappointed for him because he wanted to play and this is something we can’t control.”
