ABUJA—THE Police at Force Headquarters, yesterday, paraded two suspects, Briggs Dinabo and Harry Omeba, arrested over alleged unlawful possession of firearms and violence during the Rivers State supplementary election to the state House of Assembly.
Briefing newsmen on the arrest, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood, said: “On February 25, 2017, during the re-run of the Rivers State legislative election, suspected thugs unleashed violence on voters, shooting indiscriminately and hijacked ballot boxes, in gross violation of the Electoral Act. In the process, the two suspects were identified and arrested by SARS Patrol team in Etche, Rivers State, in the Acura SUV with plate number AFM 875 FN Rivers. Recovered in the possession of the two suspects, were two AK 47 rifles, 24 rounds of live ammunition, two expended ammunition shells and 50 PDP card tags.”
The FPRO said investigation was being intensified to arrest other suspects still at large whose names he gave as Samuel Nwanosike, Odiame Princewill and Roland Sekibo.
However, the suspects said they knew nothing about the guns and ammunition, claiming that they were not involved in any shooting.
They said they went out in the SUV at about 4pm after the election ended, to look for food before the SARS policemen accosted them and after searching the car produced the exhibits which they could not explain how they got into the vehicle.
