NAFDAC, Police smash bread syndicate in A-Ibom

UYO—The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, yesterday, smashed a five-man syndicate which specializes in producing and marketing unwholesome bread in Akwa Ibom State.

Four persons were arrested when a combined team of officials of the agency and police from the Akwa Ibom State Police command stormed the factory site at Ekpemiong Itak village, Ikono Local Government Area of the state.

Although the prime suspect, simply identified as Emeka, took to his heels on sighting the police, four of his men were arrested and taken away.

Officials of NAFDAC sealed off the depot and carted away hundreds of loaves of unwholesome bread, including wrappers and labels of other quality bread which the fraudsters used as cover to sell their illicit bread.

The Senior Regulatory Officer,  SPO, of NAFDAC Mr. Abutu Michael, who led the inspection team on behalf of the head of NAFDAC in the state, Mr. Collins Ogedegbe, admitted that such cases have been rampant in the state.

“We have been handling these kinds of case in the state,” he said, adding that the agency would stop at nothing to ensure the enforcement of quality control regime on food products in the State.

He assured of proper investigation  to ascertain whether the company’s operations complied with the regulatory demands of the agency.
