By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Mixed reactions have started trailing the expected release of $185,451,792.92, the second tranche of the Paris Club refund to Imo State, recently  ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Chief Rochas Okorocha

The figures making the rounds in Owerri showed that while Abia State will smile home with $151,410,816.39 and Anambra State $162,163,091.98, Ebonyi and Enugu States will receive $119,419,427.28 and $142,034,156.54 respectively.

An appointee of Governor Rochas Okorocha, who craved anonymity said: “If the figures being bandied about is correct, then it means that Imo will have the highest release from the Paris Club refund, in the South-East geo-political zone.

“The governor is at liberty to channel the fund to whatever project he likes, not minding that it may run contrary to the wishes of some people.”

In his reaction, a senior civil servant that spoke on grounds of anonymity, said he won’t be surprised if the current refund is spent like previous ones.

According to the civil servant,“there has been a lot of funds flowing into Imo State, since 2011, including internally generated revenue. I will not be surprised if the current Paris Club refund is spent like previous ones.

“We can count the number of projects started and destroyed by the same Okorocha administration. This is a very bad way of superintending over public funds.”
