Uyo—Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a Bill that makes provisions for the effective administration of Criminal Justice and other related matters in the courts in the state.
The passage of the private member bill sponsored by member representing Etinan state constituency, Aniefiok Dennis, came after a careful consideration of the report submitted by the House Committee on Judiciary, Justice Human Rights and Public Petitions at yesterday’s plenary.
The lawmakers, in their separate contributions, pointed out that the law would enhance efficient and effective administration of criminal justice in the state as obtained in other states of the federation.
According to them, the law will among other things, generally improve on the extant law, the Criminal Procedure, which has been in force, largely unchanged for over 70 years.
The Speaker, Mr Onofiok Luke, in his remarks appreciated the lawmakers for painstakingly considering the reports on the bill and for its passage.
He commended the committee for carrying out an in depth research on the bill which has 495 clauses before submitting its report,and assured Akwa Ibom people that the legislature would always be alive to its legislative responsibility.
Luke, however, announced some minor changes in the leadership of the House following the decision of majority of the members.
According to him Aniekan Bassey of Uruan state constituency has been replaced as the Deputy Leader of the House with Ime Okon of Ibiono Ibom constituency.
