ABAKALIKI—The crisis rocking the Ebonyi State chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday took another dimension as a factional group indefinitely suspended the embattled state chairman, Ikechukwu Nwafor for his inability to render financial account of the Union.
In a meeting at the state NULGE office in Abakaliki under tight security, the Splinter group thereby nominated the state Vice Chairman of NLC, Comrade Leonard Nkah as the Acting State Chairman of the Union.
The factional group alleged that Nwafor has failed to account for all the monthly stipends and subventions received on behalf of the congress from the state government and other sources.
The group alleged that the sum of N350 deductions from the salaries of all Ebonyi workers each successive month was allegedly remitted into the personal account of the embattled chairman.
But in a swift reaction, the embattled NLC, Nwafor maintained that he remains the state chairman of NLC. In his statement, stressing that his purported suspension did not follow due process laid down in the constitution of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
He noted that there was no financial problem in the union, promising “when time come if there is any need to address the media, I will talk point to point on the matters and am not aware of any suspension”.
The factional Chairman of the Union also alleged that Nwafor failed to account for all monies received in respect of Democracy Day; Independence Day and Workers Days celebration.
He added “for the avoidance of doubt, Comrade Ikechukwu Nwafor was suspended indefinitely from office for failure to account for all monies received in respect of Ezillo Peace Tree Planting; failure to account for the proceeds to NLC from the Government’s donation of four Commuter/Mass Transit Buses with additional N2million”.
