Coconut Oil Refinery project: A-Ibom govt assures community on compensation

By Dennis Udoma

UYO—Akwa Ibom State Government has appealed to the people of Odoro Ikot community, in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of the state to cooperate with the state government to realise the Coconut Oil Refinery project.

State Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Ime Ekpo, made the appeal in Uyo, while reacting to allegations by the community  that the state government acquired the land for the coconut plantation project illegally and without following  due process.

According to him, “The particular land lying between Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo Local Government Areas had been a source of protracted conflicts between the two councils.

“Government decided to take the area for the purpose of planting coconut trees. There is also a process of acquiring about 15, 305 hectares.

“The communities have agreed that government should take the area and use it. The surveyors are already there and until they complete the survey work, we cannot publish revocation notice and we cannot carry out enumeration for payment of compensations.

“Let there be peace so that government can pay the compensations.”
