Coalition to host ‘Ikeja Health and Fitness Walk against Obesity and NCDs’

HARMONY Life Family Foundation in collaboration with Guild of Exercise and Wellness Professionals of Nigeria (GEP), Women’s Right and Health Project (WRAHP), and Mirabel Centre are organizing a health and fitness walk to mark World Awareness Month for Colon (Colorectal) Cancer. This initiative is consistent with the foundation’s other projects to educate and support Nigeria families.

Healthier lifestyle

The health walk which has been endorsed by the Commissioner of Health, Lagos State, would sensitize the general public on the need for a healthier lifestyle against the risks posed by Obesity and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as Colon and Breast Cancer, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Hypertension, and Strokes; due to the influx of unhealthy foods and sedentary lifestyle that has resulted in many health issues in our society. According to statistics, 1 in 5 Nigerians are at a risk of hypertension and sudden deaths due to unhealthy habits.

Billed to hold on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, the services of doctors would be engaged during the walk to carry out free medical tests of blood sugar, blood pressure and cancer. Fitness professionals and nutritionists will also be engaged to train and  give health talks/advice. Walkers will convene at the Haven events centre, GRA Ikeja, from where they will proceed to the Ministry of Health, Alausa, Lagos between 8.00 and 11.00 am.

This walk is an NCD-focused activity which will aid government effort in dealing with the threat posed to her citizenry. “Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, hypertension, strokes are becoming rampant in our community”, the organizers say.

The walk will further reduce ignorance and increase awareness on healthful behaviour thereby increasing the life expectancy rate in Nigeria.

Endorsing the event and expected to participate are Hon. Folajimi Jubril Mohammed, House of Reps, Ikeja 1, Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu, House of Reps, Ikeja; Hon. Olulade Olusegun, House of Reps, Epe 2, as well as Hon. Desmond Elliot.
