A 25-year-old carpenter, Joseph Okoye, who allegedly abducted and raped a teenage girl, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
He was, however, released on bail in the sum of N300, 000.
The accused, who resides at 5, Omole St., Ijegun, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of abduction and rape.
The offences, according to Police prosecutor Raphael Donny, were committed sometime in November 2016 at the accused’s apartment.
Donny said the accused abducted a 15-year-old girl at her guardian’s house and took her to his apartment.
“When the girl’s guardian was unable to locate her, she decided to report at a police station that she was missing.
“The girl was later seen at the accused’s street and was traced to his house.”
The offences contravened Sections 259 and 267 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 259 stipulates life imprisonment for offenders.
The accused, however, denied the charge.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Davies Abegunde, granted the accused N300, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
She directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The case has been adjourned to March 22.
