
Abuja – Three businessmen were on Tuesday arraigned in a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for alleged extortion.
The defendants, Chigbu Ikechukwu, Amobi Wigwe and Ifeanyi Onyia, all of Jabi Garage, Abuja, were charged with Joint act and extortion.
They denied committing the offences, while the judge, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, admitted them to bail in the sum N30,000 each, and a surety each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till April 25 for hearing.
The prosecuting counsel, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, had informed the court that one Timothy Adike of Jabi Motor Park reported the matter at Utako Police Station on March 18.
Auhioboh said that, on the same date at about 10 p.m., the defendants conspired, and “tied and beat up the complainant for no just cause.’’
She said that the defendants also collected two cell phones, an ATM card and N23,500 from the complainant.
Auhioboh also said that during police investigation and interrogation, the defendants admitted committing the offences, but the items were not recovered from them.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 79 and 292 of Penal Code.
