Audu Ejo, Head Coach, Sand Super Eagles, on Monday said his team’s qualification for the 2017 Beach Soccer Tournament was their “best Christmas gift’’ for the nation.
Ejo made the assertion when he spoke in Lagos after the final of CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria lost 8-3 to Senegal in the competition that held at Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island, Lagos from Dec. 13 to Dec.18.
“The plan is to win, but we are thankful that we qualified for the World Cup which is vital; we were able to make it through in spite of the situation.
“This is the best gift to Nigerians for Christmas, we will ensure that we start training early enough,’’ he said.
He statedthat the Lagos State Government would partner with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure that the Sand Super Eagles are provided with needed logistics for the World Cup campaign.
“The Lagos State Government is now very much involved in our preparations, they have promised to ensure that we kick-start our preparation early enough.
“The NFF and Lagos State will work together,’’ Ejo said.
To qualify, Sand Super Eagles won its opening match against Egypt 3-2 and lost 4-2 to Cote d’Ivoire after a 4-4 draw at regulation time and then beat Ghana 4-3.
The team also trashed Morocco 8-4 in the semi-finals.
The winners and the first runners-up qualified for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Nassau, Bahamas from April 27 to May 7, 2017.
The Sand Super Eagles have won the CAF Beach Soccer tournament twice in 2007 and 2009, while Madagascar won the 2015 edition.
