Benin Palace dismisses alleged demotion of prominent chief

By Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—BENIN Traditional Council, BTC, has dismissed claims of a purported demotion of one of its prominent chiefs, Osemede Adun, by the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba Ewuare II.

BTC, in a statement yesterday, by its Secretary, Mr. Frank Erhabor, said Chief Osemede, the Ayobahan of Benin Kingdom, was not only found worthy by late Oba Erediauwa who initiated him into the chieftaincy title rank, but had equally demonstrated unalloyed loyalty to the present Oba.

It attributed the alleged demotion of Chief Osemede from the 4th position of hierarchy to 14th, as the handi-work of mischief makers who were out to misinform the public for personal interests.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State presents the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Omo n'Oba n'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin after his coronation, Thursday

According to the statement, “He has shown close loyalty to the present Oba of Benin, his Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba Ewuare II right from the time the present Oba was still the Edeikan of Uselu. His Royal Majesty has had no reason to have contrary opinion of Chief Osemede Adun. No matter what anyone may think about Chief Osamede Adun, the Aypbahan of Benin, the palace duty to all chiefs is to first endeavour to make bad man good, and good man better and not to make the situation worse.

“Therefore, Chief Ayobahan has not done anything wrong in the palace to warrant the purported demotion as being speculated in the social media. Mischief makers usually try to mislead the public by taking undue advantage of the power of circulation of the social media to malign names of innocent people.”

In his reaction, Chief Osemede Adun described his purported demotion as unfolded, a calculated attempt to smear his hard earned name, adding that he had since written a petition to the state Police Commissioner against those responsible for the false alarm and criminal defamation of his character.
