LOKOJA—Many were feared killed, while houses were burnt in Bassa-Komo, Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State yesterday, following a fracas between the Ebira and the native Bassa people.

Though the actual figure of casualties is yet to be officially ascertained, sources within the community said the figure was above 10 from both sides, with wanton destruction of properties in the community.

A source said: “Dangerous weapons such as guns, daggers, knife and clubs were freely used in the clash that lasted for many hours.

“Many houses were set ablaze during the attack that lasted for several hours, leading to pandemonium among the natives, with residents scampering for safety.”

The source further hinted that the crisis and the destruction were aided by the peculiar terrain of the community, which can only be accessed through water.

Vanguard gathered that some of the security operatives deployed to quell the crisis were involved in an accident at Odenyi (a distant community), in which two died, while the others were rushed to Dekina General Hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer, William Anya, who confirmed the incident, said houses were burnt.

He, however, said the community had already been deserted before the arrival of the detachment of police sent to restore sanity in the area.
