Delta communities sue Indian oil firm over poor operations standard

By Onozure Dania

A community-based civil society group, Okpai National Union, in Ndokwa-East Local Government Area of Delta State, and the oldest man in Okpai clan, Pa Patrick Obianife, have dragged an Indian oil firm, Sterling Global Oil Company, before a Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, challenging the operations of the company, which they argue do not conform to any known standard in the oil industry.

The plaintiffs in suit FHC/ASB/SS/36/2013, are praying the court to compel the Indian firm to comply with minimal requirements of the law, contending that the company did not conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA, before it began drilling the oil wells in the communities and laying of pipelines, which they noted have impacted negatively on the people.
