3 bag 6 months jail for stealing 11 chickens from poultry farm

A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced two men and a woman to six months imprisonment each for stealing 11 live chickens from a poultry farm.

The Magistrate, Mrs Helen Danboyi, sentenced the convicts after they pleaded guilty and begged for mercy.

Danboyi said the sentence was meant to serve as deterrence to others who might want to engage in a similar act.

The magistrate, however, gave each of the convict option to pay N20, 000, fine and N18,000 as compensation to the complainant.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Karimu Bashiru, had told the court that Samson Musa and Emmanuel Iliya stole 11 chickens from Rita Okereke’s farm and sold same to Comfort Ado.

The convicts, all residents of Ungwan Jarawa Utan Jos, were arraigned on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, theft and receipt of stolen property.

He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 348, 287 and 317 of Penal Code.
