T/tennis Championship: Oshonaike angry over Nigeria’s walk-over

By Ben Efe

Veteran Nigerian table tennis player, Funke Oshonaike has expressed her disappointment with the walk-over rites performed on the Nigerian women team at the Africa senior table tennis championship, which began in Agadir, Morocco yesterday.

Oshonaike was peeved that the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation and Sports Ministry failed to pay the way of the women’s team to the tournament. Oshonaike who is based in Germany made it to Morocco on her own accord.

“I’m so very sad and disappointed. After more than 25yrs of representing Nigeria I have been  touched where they are not supposed to touch me and it hurts so bad!

“Nigeria was walked over because we couldn’t produce a team. I understand that the other girls couldn’t make it since the Sports Ministry failed to fund their trip.

“No money? And we are the champions in Africa? Oshonaike quipped.

The sack from the tournament will cost the Nigerian women team participation in the ITTF World Championship in Sweden next year. It could also hurt their world rankings points.

“Personally it is shocking to me seeing other African players who are not up to Nigeria’s standard  being here whereas the so-called giant of Africa is not here,” added the player who made Nigeria’s team to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in August.
