ABUJA—THE Senate yesterday called for the reintroduction of toll gates on the nation’s highway, as part of moves to generate revenue for the provision of infrastructure.
Against this backdrop, the Senate mandated its Committee on Works to form a synergy with other relevant stakeholders to brainstorm and come up a holistic policy that would help set up toll gates in Nigeria.
The committee is also to come up with a blueprint of effective ways of generating funds for road construction and maintenance.
The Senate also urged the committee to do a thorough job and report back as soon as possible to enable lawmakers take a position on the issue.
The resolution of the Senate was sequel to a motion moved by Senator Suleiman Nazif, APC, Bauchi, titled Need for the Re- establishment of Toll Gates on our Federal Highways.
Meanwhile, the motion by Senator Stella Oduah, PDP, Anambra North on the need for the establishment of inland ports in Onitsha, Enugu and other land-locked states was stood down for another legislative day.
If it was taken, it would have served as a relief for maritime ports in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Calabar, which she said were being overstretched.
