BENIN—The Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Benin, yesterday, granted an ex-parte application by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and its candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu to inspect all materials used in the conduct of the September 28, governorship election in the state.
The three-man Election Petitions Tribunal is headed by Justice A. Badamasi with Justices Ade Sodum and Khadi Usman as members.
It will be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had last September 29, 2016, declared Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress, APC, winner of the election with over 300,000 votes to defeat his PDP opponent who polled a total of over 250,000 votes.
Counsel to the petitioners, Kingsley Obamogie, said that the application was in line with section 151 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.
He explained that the motion ex-parte granted by the tribunal was a prelude to the petitioners filling their petition before it.
Obamogie contended that the section empowered the petitioners to bring a motion ex-parte to pray the tribunal to inspect all INEC’s materials used for the election.
