DEFAMATION: Odili slams N6bn suit against Peterside

By Jimitota Onoyume

PORT HARCOURT—FORMER governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili has slammed a N6 billion defamation suit against Dr Dakuku Peterside, before a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

Peterside was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the last governorship election in the state, and is currently the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.

Dr Odili mounted the witness box before Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra to adopt his witness statement yesterday.

The defendant, Dr Peterside, was not in court and was also not represented by a counsel.

Counsel to Dr Odili, Mr Kanu Agabi, SAN, told the court that there was proof that Dr Dakuku was properly served the court processes through a courier service.

Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra, who is Chief Judge of the state, adjourned further hearing in the suit to October 27.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the court hearing, Agabi explained that his client felt defamed by a statement credited to Dr Peterside in a publication on the Supreme Court verdict on Rivers State governorship election, which made him to approach the court to vindicate himself.

“We sued for libel and we have called our first witness. Court has adjourned for cross examination to October 27. We felt defamed by their (defendant) publication and we are here to vindicate ourselves,” he said.

“You could see that the defendants were not in court but they had been served, they have been properly served. The court would not have proceeded otherwise,” Agabi.
