From account holder to house owner: The story of Lagos business woman

By Nkiruka Nnorom

When Mrs Clara Ego Ibebu, an international business woman resident at Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos, set out to open a savings account with Fidelity Bank Plc, she obviously was not thinking of or expecting any reward in the bargain. Her intention was to use the platform to save some of her excess earnings for the rainy day.  Little did she know that the decision will culminate in a life changing event for her. In fact, that action has unexpectedly resulted in her being the proud owner of a gorgeous four-bedroom duplex in Lekki Gardens, Lagos State.

The windfall came courtesy of a customer loyalty reward scheme by Fidelity Bank Plc, tagged: “Save 4 Shelter’ promo.  With this, Ibedu became the third person to win a duplex in the promo which came to an end recently.

The first duplex located at Lingo Estate, Lokogoma Abuja, was  won by Hadiza Kuburat Umar Suleiman and the property was formally presented to her in December 2015.

The second promotion house located at 5th Avenue, off Road 2, Rumuibekwe Housing Estate, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was won by Odianosen Adodo, an artisan resident in Benin City who banks with Uromi Branch of the bank.

The keys and title deed of the property were presented to him in March. Each of the duplexes, a masterpiece of modern architecture, is worth over N30 million, making the total value of the three duplexes given out by the bank throughout the eight month period the promo lasted to well over N90 million.

Expression of gratitude

Ibebu had approached the bank for foreign exchange for her trip abroad, but was told the deal will only sail through if she opened a savings account with the bank. While expressing her thanks to Fidelity Bank for the gift, she said: “Really, I was not expecting anything like this. When they called me after the draw, I thought it was a sort of scam; so I waited to see the house”. She did not stop there.

“In fact, I went to buy dollars for my trip and I was told that they don’t sell to working customers except I open an account. So, I reluctantly opened a savings account and funded it so that I could buy, but today, it has paid off. I am the winner of four bedroom duplex. I say a big thank you to Fidelity Bank,” an elated Ibebu added.

Rationale behind the promo

The promo, which commenced in September, 2015, is the fifth in the series of promos the bank has organised in the last eight years. The promo seeks to reward loyal customers who maintain savings account with the bank and focuses on one of the basic needs of man, which is housing. The promo is also the bank’s way of supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to bridge the huge housing deficit in the country.

Explaining the rationale for the promo, Mr. Obaro Odeghe, General Manager, Apapa Region, Fidelity Bank Plc, who is also the Committee Chairman, ‘Save 4 Shelter’ Promo, said the promo is in synch with the bank’s overall strategy and financial inclusion of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. He explained that it is also a reward scheme for loyal customers of the bank, saying: “There are a lot of un-banked populace currently in Nigeria and one of our retail strategies is to encourage savings culture among Nigerians and to also reward the customers of the bank who have been saving with us for quite some time”.

“This goes a long was to show the concern we have in meeting the basic needs of our numerous customers because at Fidelity Bank, we do much more than a decent interest while saving your money,” Odeghe added

According to Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, Managing Director of the bank, the initiative was targeted at improving the financial well-being of customers of the bank, even as he promised that the bank would continue to come up with initiatives that would empower its customers and make them grow. “This promo is a special effort on the part of the bank to continue to build strong savings culture among our customers and among generality of Nigerians as a whole. It is also our way of supporting people’s aspiration to rent their own property or own their own houses,” he said.
