MAKURDI—Following the sudden surge in cases of killings and snatching of motorbikes from commercial motorcycle operators in parts of Benue State, the State Police Command, yesterday, smashed a syndicate of 14  that specialized in robbing motorcyclists in the state.

Parading the suspects in Makurdi, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Paul Yakadi said the gang members were arrested in a special operation in parts of the state.

Yakadi said the Command was also able to recover 18 stolen motorbikes from the gang  alleged to be  responsible for the series of cases of motorbike snatching in the town and other parts of the state.

Represented by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu, he said that members of the gang were arrested in Guma and Makurdi local government areas of the state.

Among those apprehended for the crime was 28-year-old father of five, Terkimbi Wawo, who was nabbed in Guma Local Government Area. He reportedly  confessed that he specialized in receiving and selling the stolen motorbikes after every successful operation by the gang.

“So far I have stolen and received five motorcycles since I started the business last year. What we do is to go to other local government areas in the state and snatch motorcycles from the owners or steal the bike from wherever they are parked and ride it back to Daudu where we place it for sale for N50,000.” He confessed.

Another member of the gang, 32 year old motor mechanic from Guma local government, who also confessed to being a receiver, Gabriel Uyua, said he had been in the business for close to 4 years.

He, however, added that he handed himself to the Police in a bid to get an amnesty from the state government for his crimes.
