In a bid to make Nigerian graduates employers of labour and globally competitive, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Nigeria, UNN, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba has urged higher institutions across the country to give priority to entrepreneurship studies and research development programmes.

He said fostering entrepreneurial skills among students, as well as enhancing research development would solve the current unemployment menace and other problems confronting the nation.
The VC stated this while receiving the 2016 South-East VC of the year award and Students Union Government, SUG, South-East Patron Award from the Council of SUG presidents’, south-east zone at his administration office in Nsukka campus of the university.
Speaking on his commitment to enhance entrepreneurial skills in the institution, Prof. Ozumba said, “Plans are already in place to enable students of the institution manufacture the next brands of Laptops in the university.”
He said his administration was charting a way forward for the institution, adding that more would be done in terms of infrastructure and ICT development that would make UNN a pace-setter for universities in the country.
Commenting on the award presented to him, Ozumba said, it would inspire him to do more while assuring the union leaders of his to support to develop student unionism in the South-East zone.
He however, enjoined students’ union leaders to always sue for peace and shun violence capable of destabilizing the country’s educational sector.
Earlier, the Chairman, Council of South-East SUG President, Comrade Ilogebe Chidi said the award was an initiative of the body to encourage university VCs who were outstanding in office. He said Ozumba’s achievements in the area of infrastructure, research development, ICT development and support for students’ unionism in the institution informed his nomination.
Also speaking, the host, UNN SUG President, Comrade Peter Orji, described the event as worth-while, adding that he was very happy to be part of the event considering the VC’s strides in his two years in office so far.
