BENIN—A former member of the National Assembly in the Second Republic and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State, Mr. Sunny Uyigue, has described the statement credited to Senator Dino Melaye on the floor of the Senate on Governor Adams Oshiomhole’ s marriage to a foreign wife as unfortunate and an abuse of parliamentary privileges.

He demanded for an unreserved apology from Senator Melaye for insulting the governor and Edo people.

Uyigue, who spoke to Vanguard in Benin while reacting to the comment, said that Melaye should have first and foremost purged himself of sitting with Senator Sani Yerima from Zamfara State in the Senate who had married a 14-year-old Egyptian in a controversial manner before taking on Oshiomhole.

He said: “His conduct is very unparliamentarily, inhuman and uncivilized. Even during the primitive age, people did not make such comments not to talk of this 21st century. If such a comment came from a  tout in the motor park, it would be an affirmation that touts should not represent us in the National Assembly.

“This shows that we have so many misfits and unqualified persons in the National Assembly and I am calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to first, before anybody is cleared to contest election into the National Assembly, such a person should be sent to the hospital and be examined by psychiatric experts.

“This is because no sane person would dabble into the private affairs of an individual because everybody has his or her private life to live.”
