Two sailors were kidnapped after a ship belonging to French oil industry services group Bourbon was attacked in the waters off Nigeria’s coast, the company said Wednesday.
“The Bourbon Liberty 251, was the object of an attack off Nigeria on (Tuesday)… Two crew members of Nigerian and Russian nationalities are considered as abducted,” Bourbon said in a statement.
“The ten other crew members are back on board the vessel in Onne port (in Nigeria), safe and sound,” it added.
In April 2015 another of the group’s boats, Surfer 1440, was attacked off Nigeria and three crew members taken hostage. They were freed unharmed one month later.
In recent years foreign and local employees have become a target for the armed groups who also regularly sabotage the oil infrastructure in Nigeria, Africa’s number one crude producer.
Oil accounts for some 90 percent of OPEC-member Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.
