LAGOS—Officers of Lagos State Police Command have arrested seven notorious cultists, after they allegedly broke into the shop of a woman they referred to as Iron Lady.

While parading the suspects yesterday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspects were arrested in an effort to reduce cultism and street fights.

Owoseni added that after profiling the suspected cultists, police discovered that some of them were connected with previous murder cases during the last electoral campaigns in the state.

All the suspects denied being cultists. One of them said he would employ legal means to fight the police and prove his innocence and clear his name.

According to one of the suspects, Afolabi, who is from Isale-Eko, “I am married with two children. I was arrested for armed robbery alongside Lateef and five others by one Ola Williams, popularly known as Iron lady.

“She claimed we fought her. She said we came to make trouble with her in her shop and stole some of her wares. I work and have never killed anyone.

“I was arrested in my workplace when policemen came to raid the area two weeks ago. The person that fought with the woman was not even arrested; police arrested me in place of the person they were looking for.”

He added that since he was arrested, he had not seen the light of day except for yesterday, when they were paraded.

‘Police ask us to beg one Iron Lady

He said: “My family would be worried sick, because they do not know my whereabouts.”

Another suspect, Lateef, said: “I do not know why I was arrested, but the police said a woman called Iron Lady said we broke into her shop and destroyed her properties. Some of the policemen that arrested us are our friends.

“They asked us what we did to the woman. They told us to go and beg her. Since our arrest, they did not allow any of us to contact any member of our family. Immediately I was arrested, the officers switched off my phones.”

A third one, Ogundimi, said: “I work at Lagos Island Local Government Area as a park attendant. I was not caught with a gun. I asked the police why I was arrested because I do not know why I was arrested.

“During the election campaigns, I ran away from the area because of the killings. After the election period, I came back to the area.

“All the scars you see on my body were sustained during the election campaigns, when Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, thugs attacked me. It was Iron Lady that ordered our arrest. I am not a cultist.”
