Imo NBA condemns cut in salaries of magistrates

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Imo State Branch of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has condemned what it called “the unconstitutional, illegal and insensitive reduction of the salaries of magistrates of Imo State Judiciary by the administration of Owelle Rochas Okorocha.”

The lawyers’ reaction came on the heels of the state government’s pronouncement and  moves to unilaterally downgrade and slash the salaries of magistrates in the state.

The position of Imo lawyers was made public through a statement signed by the NBA chairman of Owerri Branch, Mr. Stanley Imo, and his colleagues from Orlu, Okigwe and Mbaise, Christian Ikwuoma, Max Nwokenta and Chris Ugwuorji respectively.

“The Bar in Imo State hereby condemns in very strong terms and also rejects any purported new salary structure unilaterally formulated by the Imo State government for Imo State magistrates,” the NBA said.
