Members of the Association of African Traditional Religion of Nigeria (AATREN), thronged the Divination Centre at Iroko-Awe, Eti -Osa local government council of Lagos State to offer special prayers for the nation and Lagos State in particular.
The President, Chief Ifasegun Elegushi, who presided over the special prayer session, noted that it has been the usual practice of the association during its monthly meetings to ask the oracle (Ifa), what it has in stock for the rulers both at the local, state and federal levels.
According to him, “after such consultations made through one of the deities, Odus, Ifa Oturugbon, it was revealed that sacrifices should be offered to the gods for a peaceful tenure of our President, Gen Muhammadu Buhari and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.
“Ifa further instructs us to make sacrifices for the peace, progress and protection of the nation and for Lagos State in particular.”
The president also appealed for more recognition of his members by the government, adding that despite non-recognition and assistance from the government, the traditionalists cannot but act and play their role as law abiding citizens to ensure that peace and tranquility reign supreme wherever they reside.
“We believe as traditionalists to always do our bit and ensure that peace reigns supreme in and around where we reside. We have prayed as the oracle commanded, so that our leaders succeed and their tenure peaceful. It is when they have peaceful governance that we also can operate with ease”, Elegushi said.
In her remarks, the Legal Adviser of the Association, Mrs. Adepeju Omotayo, noted that Nigeria remains a secular state and government should not place other religions above the traditional religions.
She said that a petition had been sent to the National Assembly on the discrimination against traditional religion but lamented that nothing has been done about it till date.
