Managing Director, Nigerian Gas and Steel (NGSL), Chief Hasib Moukarim, has advised structural engineers, builders and others to adopt Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) a steel pipe that is cost saving and durable for constructions.

Moukarim who doubles as an industrialist, said this in a statement, where he called on builders to consider HSS as a building material for clients and further reduce building collapse to the barest minimum in the country.

According to him, “It is good that we solicit for the right steel, especially HSS, the steel pipe and tubes for construction of warehouses and buildings, that would enable clients gets the cost saving and the professionals get the credit”.

He explained that HSS is a type of steel tube produced by NGSL with greater strength to weigh ratios than wide flange beams, adding that HSS has been described by the Steel Tube Institute of North America as the design material of the 21st Century.

He pointed out that the new airport terminals and shopping malls in the world are built by HSS because of its big save costing and superior strength; since builders need less steel to do the same job and less tonnage of weight equals less cost.

He further explained that, “HSS have excellent compression characteristics and exceptional torsional resistance and is available in commercial sizes for the construction of warehouses, terminals, billboards, bridges, malls and towers. It is also used in casing boreholes and for piling soft grounds.

“The company has been operating in Nigeria for the past 38 years and the oldest steel pipe manufacturing plant in the country for the furniture industry and metal fabricators.”

However, he enjoined traders and contractors who travel to foreign countries to import building materials to patronize Nigerian made products to avert capital flight and equally enhance local capacity as a way to generate employment.
