Lago – The Nigerian contingent to the World University Games scheduled for July 4 to July 19 in Gwangju, South Korea is expected to depart the country on Friday.
Nigeria will feature 99 athletes in five events.
Bola Orodele, the Secretary, Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) told NAN in Lagos that NUGA had got the confirmation from the embassy and hopefully, the contingent would depart July 3.
“We went to the embassy, we have got the confirmation, but the embassy said we should bring a document and that is what we are trying to get as I speak.
“Hopefully, we will leave Nigeria on July 3 for Gwangju,” he said.
Nigeria will feature in five sports namely, Athletics, Taekwondo, Judo, Badminton and Table-tennis.
A total of 18 athletes, 12 badminton players, 24 Judokas, 38 taekwondoists and seven table-tennis players will represent Nigeria at the games.
Orodele appealed to corporate organisations to assist NUGA in subsequent World University Games.
He also tasked the various universities whose athletes have qualified for the Games to assist.
“We appeal to various school managements whose athletes are representing the country to help.
“You see, sports is run in a way where there must be partnership, that is why we are appealing to sponsors to help us,” he said. (NAN)
