Athletics Federation of Nigeria has been put in a fix, by the Cross River State government with regards to the hosting of the 2015 All Nigeria Championships billed for July 30-August 1 in Calabar.
The championships, is meant to be a selection trial for the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville and the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China. But from the situation on ground, this year’s edition may not see the light of the day unless the AFN and Cross River work out details within a week. Cross River had signed a five-year deal with AFN, they have been faithful in the last four editions.
Former athlete, Falilat Ogunkoya was mandated by the AFN to meet Cross River officials last week, but she had no positive news to report back to the AFN board.
“There is nothing to tell for now. But let us see what will happen next week,” Ogunkoya said in a telephone chat on Thursday.
It was gathered that Cross River is facing financial predicament following the huge bill met by the new government of Ben Ayade. “We have so many things on ground waiting for attention and it is difficult for the governor to meet all these needs,” said a source.
Last week the National Sports Commission failed to get a commitment from the governor, on the hosting of the National Sports Festival, which has now been put off till September after the All Africa Games.
