Nigerian Breweries Plc has launched Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year Award, the initiative worth N50 million annually to reward commitment and diligence to duty by teachers across the country. The award which is done on the platform of Maltina brand by the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund is aimed at restoring the pride of teachers and the dignity of the teaching profession.
World over, teachers play a vital role in training, coaching and determining the quality of education which is critical to sustainable national development. However, these moulders of the society seldom get the recognition they deserve, leading to many graduates jettisoning the profession for greener pastures
Speaking at the launch of the maiden edition of Maltina Teacher of the Year held in Lagos, Its Corporate Affairs Adviser, Mr. Kufre Ekanem said: “The Maltina Teachers of the Year is an initiative designed to recognise, celebrate and motivate teachers in Nigeria with a first year focus on public secondary schools.”
He said, apart from the initial reward for the first, second and third best, the exceptional teacher of the year will get five million, which will be repeated for five years. He noted that the Nigerian Breweries -Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund established in 1994, was to enable active contributions to the development of the education sector in Nigeria.
According to him, through the fund, it had built 250 classrooms and 22 libraries in both primary and secondary schools across 40 communities in Nigeria.
For interested teachers in public schools, collection of application forms has begun since Wednesday, 20th May, 2015, will last till Tuesday, 30th June, 2015. He advised interested teachers to download the application forms from the Maltina website, www.maltina-nigeria.com and upload to the site or return via the company’s post office mail box.
Ekanem averred that all applications will be subjected to an intense selection and judging process by an external and independent panel of judges which has been constituted to ensure transparency, credibility and objectivity of the exercise. The 5-step evaluation process of the entries received, he noted, will result in 37 state and FCT champions, from among which the Maltina Teacher- of- the- Year will emerge.
The state champions and national winners will be celebrated in a grand ceremony on Monday, October 5, 2015.
