UMUAHIA—A mild drama ensued, yesterday, as two factions of Assemblies of God Church brought their disgraceful politics to the venue where Abia State government was handing over 100 primary mission schools to churches in Umuahia.
The government had, in line with its policy of returning mission schools to their original owners, invited churches to take over their schools, but just as Governor Theodore Orji started distributing the documents to churches involved, the two factions stepped forward to collect them.
But Governor Orji, who was shocked by the conduct of the two factions, refused to hand over the document of the school owned by the church to any of them.
He laughed off the situation and assured both factions that the differences between them would be resolved later.
The governor had earlier charged the churches to ensure that higher standards were maintained in the schools being handed over.
He said it was regrettable that for decades, the policy of handing over the schools to their original owners had been in the limbo and expressed joy that his administration had broken the jinx, adding that the hand-over would be in phases.
