Lagos—An Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, yesterday, sentenced two men to 150 hours community service, for conspiracy and stealing of metal scraps.

The convicts, Lazarus Godfrey, 27 and Ishaq Sanni, 25, pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate K. O. Ariyo, who stood in for Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni.

Policemen from the Railway Command of Nigeria Police, said Godfrey, a security officer with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, stole the said metal scrap from the railway compound and sold same to the second convict, Ishaq.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Silas, are punishable under Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.

At the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, the prosecutor informed the court that the convicts had stolen the scrap on April 25, at Running Shed workshop, of NRC, Ebute Meta Junction.

The prosecutor said the stolen metal scraps are worth N1,500.

The convicts’ lawyer, Mr. F. S. Oladele, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in its sentencing, arguing that they were first-time offenders.
