By Gabriel Enogholase

BENIN—THE decision by the Edo State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to suspend the presidential and National Assembly elections in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state has been condemned by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leaders in the area who accused the commission of collaborating with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, to postpone the polls.

The PDP council chairman, Mr. Nosakhare Okunbor, said that elections had been held in seven of the 12 Wards in the council before the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mike Igini unilaterally suspended voting in the remaining five wards.

He is, therefore, demanding that elections in the remaining five wards be conducted not later than Monday or Tuesday as was done in other areas where elections were inconclusive.

He accused Edo State Deputy Governor, Odubu, of allegedly introducing violence and attempting to hijack electoral materials meant for the council.

Okunbor, said: “We are surprised at the attitude of the Deputy Governor who has introduced violence, hijacked electoral materials, and terrorized the people of Urhonigbe and Orhomenken.”

However, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Kelly Odaro described the allegations as baseless, frivolous and without any iota of truth.
