— FMC top shots quizzed
Dayo Johnson, Akure
The dust raised by the mysterious death of a former Acting Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, Ondo State, Dr David Oguntuase, is far from settling.
The preliminary report on the autopsy is anxiously awaited by the family, the police and the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, just as the police said they would be vindicated by the result of the autopsy.
Also, the Medical Director of the FMC, Dr Omotoso, and top some management staff of the hospital were said to have been quizzed by detectives from the state police command.
It was gathered that they were invited for questioning and they honored the invitation.
Oguntuase, a father of three, was a consultant pediatrician in the FMC, Owo before he was consumed in a mysterious fire that gutted his private clinic on Christmas day in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
While the police said it would not be stampeded in its investigation, the family of the deceased and colleagues in the NMA have concluded that he was murdered before his hospital was torched by arsonists.
Not satisfied with the manner the police investigation was being done, the family, last week, forwarded a petition to the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Suleiman Abba, on the matter.
The elder brother of the deceased doctor, Otunba Ben Oguntuase, said the family no longer had confidence in the state police officers handling the matter.
He urged the IGP “to compel full scale investigation of the incident with a view to identifying the perpetrators of this bestial and dastardly act and bringing them to book.”
The brother added, ‘“ If done, the justice would not only be served and serve as an expression of condolences, it would also provide the fortitude the family needed to bear the “horrific loss of unimaginable proportion.
“The family firmly believes that Dr. David Akintayo Oguntuase was murdered, his body mutilated or dismembered and then set ablaze together with his clinic.”
He alleged that he “was brutally murdered by assassins/arsonists, leaving behind a most gory sight.”
On the autopsy, he told Sunday Vanguard that experts were brought from outside Akure to do it, saying they had concluded their work. According to him, a preliminary report of the autopsy would soon be ready
“The experts have finished their work and we are expecting a preliminary report soon,’’ he stated. “Samples have also been sent to the United States, and the result from that will not be ready until after two weeks.”
Contacted, the image maker of the Ondo Police Command, Wole Ogodo, said the report was being expected.
Ogodo asked the public to await the report which will be made public.
This according to him, the report will resolve all the knotty issues and the insinuations flying around over the death of the medical doctor.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased doctor had in its petition informed the IG of the feud between the late Oguntuase and the FMC, Owo Medical Director, Omotoso.
The petition said only recently,” Dr. Omotoso had complained to the police in Owo that David and some eight other members of staff of the hospital were plotting to kill him for which David had been questioned by the police.
“We are also aware that at various times, this same Dr. Omotoso had had cause to accuse David of being behind his continuing travail with the ICPC and EFCC.
“In light of the above, we are appealing to you sir to use your good offices to investigate this matter fully and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
