Ogun LP snubs Kawonise, picks Sunmola as gov candidate

By Daud Olatunji

ABEOKUTA—Contrary to the belief that, former commissioner of Information during Otunba Gbenga Daniel administration, Sina Kawonise would emerge as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Ogun State, the party has announced a maritime consultant, comrade Abolaji Sunmola as its governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in the state.

Sunmola, an indigene of Gbagura in Abeokuta North Local Government Area of the state, aged 54, was said to have been selected by members of the National Working Committee of the party and had submitted his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The state Secretary of the Party, Sunday Oginni disclosed this yesterday while speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta .

Oginni explained that the party had replaced the name of the state party chairman , Olabode Simeon whose name had been submitted as the party governorship candidate with Sunmola.

But, Kawonise in his reaction described the development as illegality, threatening that he had assembled his team of lawyers to drag the party to the court for redress.

According to Oginni, the national leadership of the party has the final say on the choice of governorship candidate and they have chosen comrade Abolaji Sunmola as the party flagbearer.

“The party has also announced a retired teacher from Ijebu-Ode local government, Alhaja Bolanle Bonajo as the running mate .

Speaking on the criteria considered for the choice of the governorship candidate, Oginni said “ we looked at the curriculum vitae of all the aspirants before we chose comrade Sunmola because he is a unionist and a labour leader of maritime force.

“We need somebody from Ogun state that is independent. We believe his candidacy is a total break from the past”, he said.

Commenting on why the party shut the door at Kawonise whose had been an aspirant, Oginni said, the choice of Sunmola was carefully done, saying, the party appreciated the efforts put in by Kawonise.

Kawonise reacts

Reacting to his loss, Kawonise said his attention has been drawn to an illegality committed by the National Working Committee of the Labour Party in submitting the name of Abolaji Sunmola to the INEC as the LP Governorship Candidate in Ogun State.

Kawonise in a statement he personally signed, said “the fact of the matter is that I am the lawfully elected candidate of the LP in the state. I was the sole aspirant that attended the affirmative Congress of the LP in Abeokuta on December 10, 2014.

“The Congress that returned me as the Governorship Candidate was witnessed by INEC, the Directorate of State Security, DSS, the Police, and the Mass Media.

“It is on record that the INEC team that witnessed the Congress duly wrote the Report of the Congress returning me as the Governorship candidate and submitted same to INEC headquarters in Abuja.

“My legal team has concluded briefs to take up the matter in the appropriate court.
