Fulani man goes berserk in Kaduna: Kills 7, injures 14

By Luka Binniyat

ZONKWA—A Fulani gunman, Tuesday night, opened fire on a crowd at the traditional celebration of life for an 87-year-old woman, late Mama Hauwa Bello, at Yangal village, 200 kilometres South of Kaduna metropolis.

Yangal is in Yangal District, under Kamanton Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, in the southern part of Kaduna State.

Governor Mukhtar Yero condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to cause confusion and heighten tension.

Acting Chairman of Zangong Kataf council, Jonathan Asake, told newsmen, yesterday, that he had a distressed call around 11pm, informing him that an armed Fulani man and another unarmed accomplice attacked Yangal.

Asake said that when he got there, he helped in evacuating five corpses and 12 injured persons to St. Luis Hospital, Zonkwa, about 15 kilometre from Yangal village.

Asake said: “I reached Yangal village around 12am this morning, and met scores of angry, sticks and knives-wielding youths, who wanted to descent on me for coming late. I was told that an old woman had passed on and was buried.

“They said it was tradition for the grandchildren of the deceased to organize a celebra-tion in honour of any person that had passed the age of 80.

“According to the villagers, two Fulani men were sighted at 9pm on Tuesday night around the venue of the celebration— one with a gun and the other had nothing on him. Not suspecting anything, the group went on with their cerebration.

“Then the armed man opened fire on the crowd with his AK-47 rifle. He killed five people on the spot and two later died in the hospital. I saw the corpse and the 12 that were injured.”

“A Fulani man, under the protection of Police approached me, and appeared distressed while I was in the village. He claimed that the two suspects rustled his cows. But security report reaching me has not confirmed that.”

National President, Kamanton Development Association, KDA, Mr. Markus Fangan, also told newsmen that it was a planned attack that defied logic.

According to him, Yangal village has never had any brush with any Fulani and wondered why the Fulani of Yangal left the village before and after the attack.
