DUTSE — Two people were reported dead yesterday, following the collapse of entrance gate of Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State.
The tragedy occurred as some labourers were undertaking minor repairs on the gate.
It was gathered that cracks in the wall of the gate led to the collapse which resulted in the instant death of one of the labourers, while another person who was passing through the gate died.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he saw the corpse of one of the labourers who was later taken away for burial by his relatives.
The eyewitness said the sound of the collapse caused confusion among staff and students of the university, who though it was a bomb blast.
It was learned that staff and students of the university ran in different directions.
Security personnel posted there prevented journalists from taking pictures of the collapsed structure.
Effort to reach the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Jibrila Aminu, for comment proved abortive as he was said to be on official assignment. Calls to his mobile phone were also not getting through.
Vanguard’s visit to the Senate building of the university to get official comment also proved futile as none of the senior official was on seat.
However, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abdullahi Anako, confirmed the collapse of the entrance gate, but denied any death.
He said it was the Vice Chancellor that ordered the demolition of the gate, having noticed some cracks in the wall.
